Confinement and the mass gap
All mass is confinement cost. The gluon is the one carrier standing inside a closed pattern, and the mass of its confined mode is what that mode costs; the carrier has no mass of its own to add. The mode relation gives an exact criterion: the stable closed sector of a background has a gap exactly when its admitted periods are bounded, and the gap is h/(c²Tsup). Under the neutrino-minimum premise the least stable mode is the free two-strand neutrino, and the gap is its whole confinement cost, positive in every background. Free radiation carries no gap. The exterior’s one circular stroke sits at 3Rs/2 and falls away from it, as general relativity’s photon sphere does.
The record
What confined modes, neutrinos and photon rings show
The central invariant gives every closed mode a mass equal to its energy over c², and the bridge T = h/E ties that mass to the mode’s period (0.1a). The record bears on the confined modes, on the least of them and on the circular stroke of a compact exterior:

Confinement is closure; mass is its mode cost
Matter is closed stroke: braided closures of n strands of the one carrier, with confinement their topological closure (I-5). For a closed configuration C, a support with its boundary data, helix count, orientation and confinement position,
The gluon is the stroke standing inside a closed pattern’s own region, and its confined mode has mass because confinement costs energy: that cost is its entire mass. The carrier is open stroke, which stands in no closure and has no rest frame (0.1d), so the closure’s mode is the only mass the configuration carries. The operator D is to be derived (O-9), and with it every mass ratio. In the core’s scale-similar face, mnq ≃ ħξnq/(cRbox), a tighter room is a more expensive mode; Rbox is the pattern’s geometric support, never the reduced Compton wavelength, and there is no universal mass formula.
The helix count and the confinement position are separate axes. The n = 2 closure is read as the neutrino in the free room and as the neutron in the nuclear room; the n = 3 closure as the electron and as the proton. Confinement moves the mass at fixed count; changing the count changes the class, by re-braiding.
The binding skin
A bound configuration is densest at its skin and dilute at its centre, and it carries two declared charts, the exterior atlas of its source and its own interior chart, with no transfer map between them; the clamp and the binding are transacted at the skin (0.6, I-3). The pair force on the I-1 domain, Fmaxα₁α₂ = G𝓜₁𝓜₂/d² with exterior inputs αi = Rs,i/d, reads the same exterior ratios, and the exact identity κFmax = 2π normalises the character of a nontrivial rotation class to −1 with no fitted parameter.
The exact criterion
Every admitted mode’s period is tied to its cost by the bridge of 0.1a, so its mass is a positive, strictly decreasing function of its period:
Over the stable sector of a background 𝓑, the self-consistent, stable, positive-frequency closed modes it admits, the mass infimum is therefore the value at the period supremum:
positive exactly when the admitted periods are bounded and zero when they are not. Attainment is not needed. The criterion puts the whole gap in one place.
The mass gap
The neutrino-minimum premise is this paper’s: every admitted background carries a stable two-strand family, and a free n = 2 neutrino mode attains the least energy over the stable sector, at positive frequency. Its derivation from the spectrum of D is to be derived (D-01). Under it,
The least stable closed mode is the free two-strand neutrino, and it is also the mode of longest admitted period. The background enters only through the confinement operator: it changes which modes are admitted and what they cost, and two stationary backgrounds compare as Δm[𝓑b] − Δm[𝓑a] = (E2,min[𝓑b] − E2,min[𝓑a])/c², two stationary solutions with no rate between them. The ground of every domain is the substrate’s cumulative standing-wave state, read at cosmological scale as the microwave background and at quantum scale as what the standard account calls quantum fluctuations (0.8).
The exact criterion. Every admitted closed mode sits on the line m = h/(c²T), so the least mass belongs to the longest period. With bounded periods the gap is the horizontal floor h/(c²Tsup), and under the neutrino-minimum premise the mode that sets it is the free two-strand neutrino; slide the background’s longest period and the floor moves with it, positive in every background. Switch to unbounded periods to see the criterion’s other branch: the masses run down the line and the infimum is zero. The spectrum is schematic, the axes are in units of a reference period, and no mass value is printed.

Energy accounting
Density equivalence counts each channel once, 𝓜 = M + Eother/c² + PV/c² + aTrad⁴V/c² + ⋯, with a = 4σSB/c = 7.5657 × 10⁻¹⁶ J m⁻³ K⁻⁴: the thermal term written with the flux constant would be a momentum, not a mass. A confined mode’s energy enters once, as the rest contribution of its state; the solved mass aspect already carries gravitational binding; a mass budget divides the one confinement cost into channels and adds no mass of its own (0.5, I-7).
The circular stroke of the exterior
On the exact optical metric of a source’s exterior, restricted to a plane,
a constant-radius geodesic needs H′(rf) = 0, which holds on the exterior only at r* = 3Rs/2, where αext = 2/3 on the A-1 chart: inside the exterior seam at 2Rs, in the quantum-mechanical regime. It is radially unstable:
Optical arclength is c times the bookkeeper’s coordinate time along a stroke, so the rate is the photon-sphere exponent of general relativity. Circularity supplies a loop’s geometry; closure is I-5’s topological condition. This 2/3 is the exterior A-1 compactness: it is not the 2/3 of I-1a, which is A-3, and it carries no confinement threshold.
The circular stroke. A source is drawn as its fold circle, with the circular stroke at 3Rs/2, where αext = 2/3, and the exterior seam at 2Rs. A stroke arrives from the left with impact parameter b = bc(1 + δ), bc = 3√3 Rs/2. Slide δ toward zero: the stroke winds more turns about the circle before it leaves, one more turn for every factor of about 535, because a radial offset grows by e per radian. Just outside the critical value it runs outward; just inside, it runs inward to the fold. Brass marks the quantum-mechanical regime of the A-1 chart, cobalt the general-relativistic one.

The tests
Use 2 What would end each derived result
Each line below is the converse of a derived result: the measurement that would end it.
- T-1The confined gluon. A free massless asymptotic state of the standing carrier ends the reading of the gluon as a confined mode.
- T-2A massive least mode. A lightest neutrino established as massless ends the neutrino-minimum premise, and with it the value of the gap.
- T-3The least stable mode. A stable closed mode lighter than the lightest neutrino ends the identification of the gap with the neutrino’s confinement cost.
- T-4The circular stroke. A nonrotating source whose photon ring sits at other than 3Rs/2, or a circular stroke that is radially stable, ends the circular-stroke result.
Three pieces sit outside the derivation and leave every result in it unchanged:
- D-01The premise. That the free n = 2 neutrino attains the least energy over the stable sector at positive frequency, with the background’s temperature entering its cost through the same spectral relation, is to be derived from the spectrum of D (core O-9).
- D-02Across backgrounds. The response of the least cost across comparable stationary backgrounds, and the confinement position of the least mode, read through the canonical confinement odds once they exist, are to be derived (core O-3, O-9).
- D-03Uniformity. A gap uniform across backgrounds is to be derived.

Standard reading
The gluon is a gauge boson distinct from the photon, massless in its Lagrangian, with an infrared mass scale generated dynamically.
FDT reading
The gluon is the one carrier standing in a closed pattern (I-2), and its mass is that standing mode’s confinement cost (I-5).
Quantum fluctuations are virtual pairs appearing in an empty vacuum.
They are the quantum-scale reading of the substrate’s cumulative standing-wave state: no variable of the chain vanishes, so there is no empty background, and there is no virtual exchange (0.1, I-2).
Each particle has an intrinsic mass, set for the leptons and quarks by a coupling to a scalar field.
Every mass is confinement cost, the eigenvalue of a closed pattern’s mode in its support and background, with no intrinsic property to add (I-5).
Cosmological fits bound the sum of the neutrino masses through the expansion history of the standard chronology.
Those fits rest on a chronology FDT declines (0.8); the laboratory bound and the oscillation splittings bind.
Convergence
Use 2 Same source, same data
For the same source and data FDT returns the measured record. The exterior optical metric of I-3 is the Schwarzschild optical metric, and the circular radius 3Rs/2 with its radial instability and exponent are the general-relativistic photon-sphere results, recovered exactly by containment. The relations mc² = ħω and T = h/E are the measured Planck–Einstein and Compton relations, read as the chain’s one state. The lattice computations of an infrared gluon mass scale and the measured glueball-candidate spectrum are read as the confinement cost of the standing carrier, the numbers to be derived with the operator. The oscillation splittings and the laboratory bound on the absolute scale are accepted in full: the gap theorem prints no number, so every measured bound is met. Freely propagating light carries no gap and stays massless; the gap belongs to the closed sector.
One observable rests on an input the paper names: the consensus fits leave the lightest neutrino mass free down to zero, and the neutrino-minimum premise fixes it strictly positive.
